Generating publicity

Although publicity for a site will drive people to it, which is after all the point of having the site, the traffic itself serves purpose for search engines.

Any significant traffic to a site raises its credibility and hence its position within searches. Business begets business, if you will.

We have already discussed strategies for generating inbound links a couple of pages ago so this is really to advise you that the value of offline strategies such as advertising or PR are vitally important. Too many people gave the approach that "if you build it they will come". In truth, no-one knows your site's there until they find it, or are told about it.

The other option is to start a blog or a forum.

• a blog is a series of regular entries made by the company offering news, views and articles.
• a forum is a discussion area where entries can be made by anyone authorised to contribute and is usually spearated into discussion threads
